Everytime I picked this book up, I felt smarter. Some of it takes longer to read than others, and some theorists are more interesting than others, but overall I liked this text. I will say that there were times the author seemed to be rambling a bit, and he had a little trouble being concise, but overall it was informative and interesting.

A History of Western Political Thought. This is an account of the most important political thinkers and the enduring themes of the last two and a half millennia. It traces the development and consolidation of a tradition of Western political thought from Ancient Greece through to the development of the modern state, the American Enlightenment, the rise of Liberalism and the very different reactions it engendered.
The text discusses how a tradition beginning before Socrates might be said to have played itself out in the second half of the 20th century. The aim is to tell a complete story, and the text's definition of politics encompasses both power wielded from above and power threatened from below, and the sustained pursuit of this theme leads the author to present an often controversial view of the theorists of the recieved canon.
